BROTH

Every culture has it's own version of an incredible, healing broth.

We want to focus on the bone variety.

THE BENEFITS

Bone broth is rich in vitamins, collagen, gelatin, potassium, and trace minerals.

It is easy to digest and is full of nourishment.

IT'S EASY TO MAKE YOUR OWN

Making bone broth at home is extremely simple and a great way to get a rich source of nourishment.

Here are the ingredients you will need:

  • 2 lbs of bones from a healthy source - Here is one of our favorites.

    • You can use leftover bones from roasted chicken or other meats.

  • 2 chicken feet (optional) but adds more benefits - Makes it much richer in collagen.

  • 1 gal water

  • 2 TBSP apple cider vinegar - The vinegar helps to draw the collagen and other benefits out of the bones.

  • Salt and pepper to taste if desired.

DIRECTIONS

  1. If you are using raw bones, especially beef bones, it improves flavor to roast them in the oven first.

  2. Place them in a roasting pan and roast for 30 minutes at 350°F.

  3. Place the bones in a large stockpot or the Instant Pot.

  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer and cover.

  5. Cook for at least 10-12 hours, or until reduced by 1/3 or 1/2, leaving you with 6-8 cups of bone broth. The more it reduces, the more intense the flavor and the greater the number of nutritional benefits it will have. Twelve hours is the ideal amount of time unless you are using a pressure cooker, in which case the time will be much less.

  6. Strain and use or store. You can freeze large batches of bone broth in individual servings or ice cubes to drink on a cold day or use them as a base to make quick and easy soups.

BUYING BONE BROTH

Not everyone feels like making their own broth.

There are a number of great pre-made bone broths on the market.

Unfortunately, a number of them are just regular broths that have been relabeled, not true bone broth.

Here is one of our real bone broth favorites, you can also see more of our recommended brands in our shopping guide.

BONE BROTH POWDERS

Bone broth powders have become very popular, offering the benefits of bone broth in a convenient powder form.

Unfortunately, like much in the supplement industry, things are often not what they seem. Many bone broth powders are not real bone broth, or made with ethically questionable materials and unwanted additives.

SMOKE AND MIRRORS

Many "bone broth" powders are simply refined collagen powders relabeled as bone broth.

Others are a blend of amino acids, with flavorings and other additives to make it appear and taste as bone broth does.

Others may start as bone broth, but are so heavily processed and high temperature dried, that in the end they resemble nothing like real bone broth.

THE REAL THING

Real bone broth powder should be made in the same way you make yours at home.

Grass-Fed bones, slow cooked with apple cider vinegar and water.

After that, the broth is allowed to cool and is then freeze dried and milled into a powder.

That's it, simple as it should be.

Freeze drying avoids the use of heat and better preserves the nutritional value than other forms of drying.

ADDITIVES

Many companies add thickeners, flavorings, and sweeteners to cover up the fact that their "bone broth" powders may not really be what they claim them to be.

Avoid products with these ingredients.

Real bone broth products should only contain bone broth, vinegar, and salt.

INSTANTIZED

Good bone broth powder will only dissolve in hot water.

Many companies instantize their powders to make them dissolve in cold water.

The instantizing process is very harsh and will cause a loss of some of the nutritional value of the bone broth.

Others are selling refined collagen and claiming it to be bone broth powder when it is not.

Real bone broth powder will not dissolve in cold water. It becomes a lumpy mess.

GRASS-FED AND PASTURE RAISED

Real bone broth should be made from cows and other animals that are grass-fed or pasture raised fowl.

It took awhile, but we managed to find a true bone broth powder.

It is slow cooked and freeze dried for maximum nutritional value.

Each packet contains 15 grams of collagen!

Simply mix a packet into hot water and enjoy bone broth anytime you like!
